David commissions Amasa to assemble an army to fight the rebellious Israelites, but Amasa is delayed. “And David said to Abishai, ‘Now Sheba the son of Bichri will do us more harm than Absalom. Take your lord’s servants and pursue him, lest he find for himself fortified cities, and escape us’” (2 Samuel 20:6 NKJV). Overtaking Amasa, Joab slays him and continues in pursuit after Sheba, who takes refuge in the city of Abel. The citizens of Abel behead Sheba to avoid destruction of their city, ending the insurrection.
Looking at Joab’s actions in this and prior passages, we see a man who was highly flawed but still used by God to help establish and protect David’s kingship. God will accomplish His purposes through us or in spite of us. Pastor Dustin challenges believers to be obedient and available to God to use for His purposes – used because of us, not in spite of us.
