When David inquires of the Lord, God reveals that the famine, now in its third year, is His chastisement for Saul’s killing of the Gibeonites in violation of Joshua’s treaty with them. At the Gibeonites’ request, David has Saul’s surviving descendants hanged in retribution. “And after that, God heeded the prayer for the land” (2 Samuel 21:14 NKJV).
Pastor Kevin reviews the extensive background necessary for understanding this difficult passage and makes application to the current day. We see how allowing ungodly foreigners into a godly nation inevitably leads to its moral and spiritual decline and how seriously God takes covenantal requirements. Pastor Kevin also reviews several prior events in Israel’s history to show how Satan has repeatedly attempted to thwart God’s plans to establish the Messianic line through David and how God used this event to frustrate any further attempts by the house of Saul to usurp David’s kingdom.
